More woe for Brand and Ross as BBC comes under fire

There was further bad news for the BBC and presenters Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross yesterday. With the outcry over the phone calls and messages left for actor Andrew Sachs, in which Ross blurted out that his polluted looking co-presented had “f*cked” his grand-daughter, the last thing the pair, or the corporation, needed was more bad publicity but it seems inevitable now.

In an unbroadcast clip, leaked to YouTube and other file sharing websites, the pair are heard making a phone call to Soham murderer Ian Huntley. They taunt him about getting caught and Ross says “Hey Huntley, we’ve double-teamed Maxine”, a reference to Huntley’s lover and partner in crime, Maxine Carr.

The vile tirade continues with Ross claiming they dressed in Man United jerseys, a clear reference to Holly and Jessica, the two little girls killed by Huntley. There have been calls from all sides for the pair to be disciplined by the BBC, with even Prime Minister Gordon Brown saying “These two are just the lowest of the low. I am considering bringing back coroporal punishment and if we can’t hang them I think placing them in stocks and having them thrashed with a piece of birch is the very least the public wants to see”.

A BBC spokesman has defended the pair though, saying “This is really a storm in a teacup. If Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand want to take turns on the former girlfriend of a paedophile killer and then ring him up and tease him about it then that is entirely their business. The personal lives of celebrities should be of no concern to anyone.

Frankly the whole thing smacks of a Daily Mail led right-wing witch hunt. Look at the Andrew Sachs thing. We had two complaints after the show and thousands once the Mail and their ilk got their hands on the story. This is just the same. People are bored, that’s all. They’re tired of McCain and Palin, tired of Barack Obama and with nothing else going on this is just a way for editors to fill newspapers.

Anyway, if they think that’s bad wait until they hear the episode in which they use special voice filters to make themselves sound like a little girl before ringing up Kate and Gerry McCann saying “Mommy? It’s me. Maddie. Can you come and pick me up?”. It’s hilarious”.

Both Brand and Ross were unavailable for comment last night but speaking from his prison cell Huntley claims to be feeling suicidal and that his ‘feelings are really hurt’ over the incident.
